“حرصت في هذا الكتاب – إلى جانب ما ورد في إعلان الرابطة – على اتباع سبيل الاعتدال، متجنبًا الإطالة المملة والإيجاز المخل. ولأن المصادر اختلفت اختلافًا كبيرًا في كثير من أحداث السيرة بما لا يقبل الجمع أو التوفيق، فقد اخترت سبيل الترجيح، وأثبتُّ ما ترجح لدي بعد التدقيق والدراسة والنقد، دون الإكثار من ذكر الأدلة والوجوه؛ حتى لا يطول الكتاب بما لا حاجة إليه. أما في قبول الروايات وردها فاعتمدت على ما قرره الأئمة المتقنون من أحكام في الصحة والحسن والضعف، إذ لم يتيسر لي التوسع في هذا الباب. وأشرت في بعض المواضع إلى أدلة الترجيح، إما خشية الاستغراب من القارئ، أو لورود شبه اتفاق بين العلماء المتقدمين والمتأخرين على خلاف ما ترجح لدي. والله ولي التوفيق.”
